Chilled Evening

Books, PHOTO DIARY
July 17 2013

I’m sprawled across my floor with a bunch of chilled things to do this evening! Cleopatra is playing and I’m admiring Miss Taylor’s costumes and makeup… can we just have a moment to appreciate this amazing movie?
I’m also flipping through this month’s InStyle and grabbing so much inspiration! I was reading an article about colour and I began to think how fun it would be to incorporate more of it into my wardrobe and makeup looks! I’ve become so comfortable with my go-to classic black/white – with a pop of red 😉 – palette and even though I loooove it, I think it may be time for me to have a little fun! Hey, that’s what the blog is for right?

In the midst of all the colour are two wonderful books I recently picked up. The first is by Susan Cain, called “Quiet“. I was drawn to it by the white cover (no surprise there!), and after reading the blurb and the first few pages, I just had to buy it! It’s a book about the power of introverts. I did have to stop and ask myself “Am I an introvert?”. Being a Blogger and YouTuber it is hard to believe such, as the majority of my time online is spent expressing myself, my interests and the love I have for many things, in a sort of extroverted way. I love meeting new people, going out and having fun with friends. I’m assertive and strong-willed. …Extrovert Status?

But, and it’s a big but, I have always kept things I deem very special or personal, to myself. I’m the type that prefers to finish a project completely before sharing it with another person. I enjoy my own company. I tend to think before I speak, and very often I crave silence and solitude. …Introvert Status?

Can one be a mixture of both introvert and extrovert?

Anyhoo, I thought the book would be an interesting read!

The second book “Thinking fast and slow” by Daniel Kahneman was another that peaked my interest… I’m a big thinker, and any book or article about thinking is right up my street! I haven’t read much of it yet, but I will when I finish the first!

I also have instagram to go on (Obsessed!), stalk a few of my faves and post a pic or two! 😉
(I’m having a giveaway on mine so click here to find out more and enter!)

I would love to know, are you an introvert or extrovert? Or a mixture of both?

    Very fun post!

Actually, I think I’m a mix too… I like company and share with people what’s on my mind and stuff like that. But I’m also kind of shy with strangers. And some other stuff make me wonder if I’m introvert. Good question, Shirley! 🙂

Love this post.I am horrible introverted to the point were i find it hard to keep friends around because they dont understand my constant need to be alone. I hate it when people take it soooo personal.

Your quiet time looks so peaceful and relaxing. 🙂

And as for figuring out if you’re and introvert or extrovert, I know there’s a certain test out there that goes pretty deep into whether or not you’re an introvert or extrovert. Not really sure the name of the test, but the results look like: ENFP, INSJ, etc. It’s pretty detailed!

Anyway, I’m pretty much an introvert with random bouts of extrovert-ness.

I personally think that the more colorful an outfit is, the better! It’ll boost your mood instantly and it’s lots of fun mixing different colors and hues and seeing what works together.

About the book, I am definitely going to add it to my list! I love these kinds of reads. I believe I’m in between – just like you. As much as I love going out with friends and having fun, I also tend to make time for myself where I could finish projects alone and generally get some peace of mind.

I remember viewing a video of Susan Cain on YouTube, and I definitely plan on purchasing the book. As an aspiring attorney, I find myself to be an Introvert. However, I have read that Introverts do well in this field by virtue of the level of analysis and research required. I think persons are confused by Introverts and it is a shame because the world needs persons like myself. Introverts have a lot to offer.

Theres a term called centrovert, which describes a person with a mix of both introverted and extroverted tendencies. (I discovered this in a book i read recently by Devora Zack called ‘networking’). But personally Im not sure what I really am :s, i have my moments when I really need to be alone and other times were I really want to be sociable. Im not sure whether its possible for a person to be in absolutely one group. Which is why I question these personality groups?. Don’t we all really have the tendency to be in both groups depending on the people we are with, the moods we are in and just generally how comfortable we feel. I dno? maybe I’m wrong. I Just don’t think its possible to categorise people in one of just two groups, we are all so different . p.s interesting post tho, and I luv u shirley soo much xxxx

  • Reply Nkhensani July 23 2013 at 2:30 pm

I think it is possible for a person to be a mixture of introvert and extrovert. I suppose it depends on the situation- i.e. knowing how to behave, when- and maybe on a person’s individual sense of… confidence? Something like that. Good question!

Now I have something to think about, and a few books to check out. 🙂

I too am also thinking of adding more colour to my wardrobe as well as introducing more colours into my make-up routine. You know, it’s Summer and I think now is a great time to try out new things! 🙂

    Hello Ms. Shirley,
After seeing your post on instagram of the book Quiet, I had to pick it up says the book-alcoholic. LOL I am still reading but this book speaks to my soul. I knew I was an introvert but I also have qualities of an extrovert. One passage really spoke my truth, ” Introverts feel just right with less stimulation, as when sipping wine with a close friend, solving a crossword puzzle, or reading a book….they prefer to devote their social energies to close friends but after a while wish they were home in pajamas.” Now I can show my family that there are others out there like me.
Ms.Shirley keep up the positive things you are doing. I’ll keep following!

It’s interesting. I actually took a slightly legitimate test and I was 100% introvert. But what I realized was I can be around big groups of people but still be in my own head, so the definition of introvert is quite jarring so it’s often seen as extreme but I believe introverts can exist in many capacities.

    Lovely photos Shirley.

Good reads, I recently started reading the book Quiet, seeing as though I’m for sure an introvert. I like knowing that there’s some significance in thinking, analyzing situations. I’ve always been more of an observer, but in recent years I’ve learned to open up more.

“Quiet” is one of those books I keep meaning to read but never get round to. It looks right up my street and I too appreciate the unique cover (I do graphic design so I was definitely swooning).

It’s funny how a lot of bloggers tend to be introverts in real life – that’s definitely the case for me!

I’m a mixture of both.. I’m extroverted in the sense that… If you approach me we can have a good conversation and i tend to be loud and carefree around loved ones and close friends.. And introverted in the sense that you will never find me in a crowd and i don’t approach people first.. they would have to speak to me… Also at home I’m very quiet in my own space… thinking deeply all the time… I’m very analytical in thinking so I will be home quietly reflecting on past, present and future aspects of my life
